Enhanced Second Order Algorithm

Second order algorithms belong to the class of repetitive heuristic techniques, where a greedy heuristic is applied to different subsets of the space of feasible solutions of a problem. The algorithm establishes a sequence of self-contained solutions subspaces, defining an iterative process that guides a subordinate greedy heuristic through those subspaces. This steepest descent process establishes a systematic search space concentration, with no possibility of return. Patterson, Rolland and Pirkul (1999) presents an algorithm that tries to avoid this systematic concentration aspect. In this paper we follow a similar motivation, proposing the introduction of backward steps in the algorithm. The backward steps can be seen as look-behind strategies, corresponding to the reverse of the look-ahead operations considered in the forward steps, used in second order algorithms. Like the mentioned paper and other recent heuristic works, we also use the well known Capacitated Minimum Spanning Tree Problem to describe the algorithm. Computational results about its effectiveness, including a comparison with other known methods to the same problem, are also reported.
